Turkish residence permit renewal in 2026: when and how to renew
When a 2026 ikamet extension can be filed, what e-İkamet asks for, and what an overstay can mean if the window is missed.
TürkiyeRota Journal · General information

Renew the card you already hold
An ikamet is permission to stay in Türkiye for a stated period and place. Renewal extends it. Article 24 of Law No. 6458 says the governorates may extend a residence permit. You file on e-İkamet. The provincial directorate of migration management handles the file for the Presidency of Migration Management, also called Göç İdaresi or PMM.
This page is for a 2026 extension of a permit you already hold, usually short-term, sometimes family or student, including readers of Persian or Dari. Types and a first application are in the 2026 residence-permit guide. Article 33 stops a short-term extension when a condition has fallen away, the permit was used outside its purpose, or a removal or entry ban is in force. The provincial directorate decides.
The sixty-day window
Article 24 opens an extension from sixty days before expiry and requires the filing before expiry. The Presidency’s residence FAQ and the general information page say the same. Count from the date on the card. A card that ends on 1 June can be filed from sixty days earlier, and it has to be in the system before 1 June.
Applications are not yet taken from abroad, the FAQ says. If the permit expires while you are outside Türkiye, you re-enter under the visa rules between the two countries, then apply online. A legal representative or a lawyer with a power of attorney may file. Article 97, as the FAQ recalls it, still lets the administration ask you to attend.
Article 21 requires a passport, or a stand-in travel document, valid for at least sixty days beyond the period you request. An expired passport cannot carry the evaluation. Report a new passport to the provincial directorate within twenty working days.
Filing the extension on e-İkamet
First applications, extensions and transfers are filed on e-İkamet. Complete the form, take the appointment, and attend the provincial or district directorate where you live, with the listed documents. Miss that day and time without a valid excuse, and you are treated as never having applied.
From 2 May 2019 the residence FAQ ended postal extensions in all eighty-one provinces. An older e-İkamet note still mentions registered post within five business days. Use the appointment on your screen.
The appointment is free. The FAQ and the short-term list both say so, and both say to refuse a third party who charges for one. The Presidency does not work with intermediaries. File yourself, or through a legal representative or a lawyer. Residence permit consultancy helps prepare the folder.
Ninety days run from the day the complete documents arrive. The general information page ties that start to Article 22 of the implementing regulation and says you are told if it takes longer. Missing papers may get thirty days, then the application leaves the process. If you filed on time and the permit expires before the appointment, the FAQ lets you stay until that day on the application form.
Documents an extension usually includes
Open the list for your permit type. The short-term list adds a page for the ground, such as tourism, a home or a Turkish course. Family and student permits have their own lists. The directorate can ask for more. The shared short-term items are these.
- A signed application form, by you, your legal representative, or your lawyer with a power of attorney.
- A photocopy of the passport or travel document, with the identity page and any visa page. The original comes to the appointment.
- Biometric photographs from the last six months, on a white background, to the ICAO standard. The short-term list asks for two. The residence FAQ asks for four copies on the day. Bring the number your form names.
- Receipts for the residence fee and the document fee. A nationality exempt from the permit fee still pays the document fee. The payment screen shows which applies.
- Health insurance for the whole period: a bilateral social-security certificate, an SGK provision document, proof of a general-health application, or a private policy, signed or e-signed and stamped. Under eighteen and over sixty-five the guidance drops this condition. A family policy has to cover the family. A private policy must also meet the minimum cover in force since 1 April 2025 (SEDDK, reported by Anadolu Agency).
- Sufficient and regular means. Short-term and student files may use your statement unless documents are requested. On the tourism ground only, the list sets one and a half times the net minimum wage for one person, or one net minimum wage per person with family, over the last three months. A family permit needs at least one third of the minimum wage per member, totalling at least the minimum wage.
- Address registration, required for an extension or transfer: a current e-Devlet record from turkiye.gov.tr, a bill, and place proof (title deed and numbering, a notarized lease, hotel proof, a dormitory letter, or a host’s notarized undertaking, plus the spouse’s if the host is married). Property extensions add a title-deed continuation certificate. The current list states a purchase-value floor of 200,000 US dollars in lira on the acquisition date. Re-open the list first.
- UETS, from a PTT central branch. Anyone under eighteen is excused.
- A non-Latin passport page needs an approved translation. Foreign civil records need notarized Turkish and an apostille, or legalisation outside the Apostille Convention. Iran and Afghanistan are outside it. See the Persian, Dari and Pashto guide and translation services. The directorate decides.

Fees, as the screen states them
Fees Law No. 492 sets the residence fee. The amount depends on the file. The residence FAQ says e-İkamet calculates it when the application is completed, and the form shows it too. Pay the residence fee and the card fee before the appointment, whether the file is a first application, a transfer or an extension.
Pay on e-İkamet by card, at a tax office collecting non-regular taxes, at a Treasury and Finance cashier, or at Ziraat Bankası, VakıfBank or Halkbank, quoting the application number. The FAQ’s codes, read in October 2026, are 9207 for the card, 9233 for the residence fee and 9234 for a visa fee. A 30 April 2026 note said this schedule had not been raised, and pointed to the annual table.
Students at a Turkish school or faculty are issued the permit without the residence fee. Students at consulate, embassy and international schools that are not Turkish schools pay it. The FAQ’s answer leaves the card fee in place. The appointment remains free.
While the decision is pending
Article 24 gives an extension applicant a document free of the fee. With it, you may reside in Türkiye until the decision, including after the old end date. On an extension, the general information page says the system issues this application document, the ikamet izni müracaat belgesi, when the online filing is complete. The FAQ says the provincial directorate approves it.
The paper records the application. The card follows if the extension is granted, and Article 24 starts that new period when the previous one ends.
With the approved document and the fee receipt you may leave and return within fifteen days, more than once, each absence kept to fifteen days. A return inside that limit can be visa-free even where a visa is normally required. A longer absence brings the visa rules back, and Article 10’s ninety days in one hundred and eighty still applies. Carry the receipts unless the document records an exemption.

If you miss the deadline
Remain after the end date with no extension filed, and the general information page collects the residence fee for that time with an extra fold, under Article 83 of Fees Law No. 492. The FAQ says the sum varies by agreement, nationality, age and length, and that the border states it on exit. This page gives no lira figure.
Article 54(1)(g) provides removal if you held a permit and, without an acceptable reason, breach it by more than ten days. Article 54(1)(j) does so if an extension is refused and you have not left within ten days. Article 55 withholds removal in listed cases, including a serious indication of the death penalty, torture, or inhuman treatment on return. The decision is notified with its reasons.
Article 9’s entry ban is separate: at most five years, or up to ten further years for a serious threat to public order or public security. For an ordinary overstay of a visa, visa exemption, residence permit, work permit or work-permit exemption, the scale is the Presidency’s announcement of 9 June 2020, still on goc.gov.tr in October 2026.
Under three months there is no entry ban if you reach the border yourself before you are recorded, and pay, or if you leave on time under a removal decision and pay. From three months, leaving that way and paying brings one month (three to six months), three months (six months to a year), one year (one to two years), two years (two to three years), or five years (beyond three years).
An unpaid fine, a late exit, or the other listed cases, including escorted removal, use a harder scale: three months (up to three months), six months (three to six months), one year (six months to a year), two years (one to two years), or five years (beyond two years). After a ban, unpaid fines and other public debts can still block entry under Articles 7 and 15. A public-order ban can sit outside the table.
A new address or a new permit type
Report an address change within twenty working days to the migration directorate and the population and citizenship directorate. Inside the same province, the FAQ says the notice is enough and the existing card continues. Another province needs a new application there within twenty working days. If the type is unchanged, the period already paid is not charged again.
A new purpose is a transfer, a geçiş, under Article 29. The FAQ says to file it as a transfer. A student who marries a Turkish citizen may receive a family permit when the conditions are met, and may also stay on the student permit. A family-to-short-term file uses the extra pages, such as a divorce judgment or the sponsor’s death certificate, with notarized Turkish and an apostille or legalisation. Student work rules are in the residence-permit guide. Admissions are in the university guide.
Neighbourhood limits lifted in June 2026
In June 2026 an administrative change lifted the closure that had blocked new residence applications and new address registrations in neighbourhoods treated as too dense, including the Istanbul bans. FK Hukuk describes that earlier density practice and says Istanbul’s districts and neighbourhoods, including Fatih, Esenyurt and Avcılar, are open again for a new application and for address registration. The note includes the short-term permit in Article 31 of Law No. 6458. Its pages name no shared day in June.
MFY Legal’s list, updated 1 February 2026, still describes the older closure and is not a June record. Confirm the address on your own e-İkamet file. The other conditions of the permit still apply.
Common mistakes
Most late files look like this.
- Filing after the end date. More than ten days over, without an acceptable reason, is the Article 54 removal ground.
- Paying for an appointment, or uploading a page the issuing office did not produce.
- A passport short of the extra sixty days, or insurance that ends too soon.
- A lease without the notarization, or an address that disagrees with the lease, the bill and the province.
- No address registration and no UETS, or a missed appointment without the original passport.
- A change of purpose filed as an ordinary extension, or a new address you have not confirmed with the provincial directorate.
- More than fifteen days abroad on the application document.
- English alone, or an Iranian or Afghan civil record with no legalisation, where notarized Turkish was required.
A practical checklist
Use your own screen as the list.
- File within the sixty days before the end date, and before that date.
- Match the passport to the requested period plus sixty days, and the insurance to the whole period.
- Open e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr yourself, pay the fee and card fee the screen shows before the appointment, and keep the receipt.
- Bring the e-Devlet record, the bill, the place proof and, from age eighteen, UETS from a PTT central branch.
- Finish any Turkish translation, apostille or legalisation first. Translation services can prepare the pair.
- Attend with the original passport and the photographs on the form. If you travel while waiting, return within fifteen days with the application document and the receipt.
- If the end date has passed, read Article 54 and the 9 June 2020 announcement, then ask the provincial directorate or YİMER: 157 in Türkiye, +90 312 157 11 22 from abroad.
What we can prepare, and who decides
These pages were read in October 2026, and a list, an address limit or a fee screen can change. Residence permit consultancy can sort the dates and help prepare the file. The Presidency decides through the provincial directorate. TürkiyeRota helps with the papers and does not issue the permit. Keep passport numbers out of the first message.
